It’s show time for Somerset clients celebrating Seniors Week

MORE than 300 people will come together for Somerset Seniors Day at Toogoolawah Showgrounds to celebrate Queensland’s Seniors Week.

The fun day, on Friday August 26, will feature live entertainment including performances by local talent Kathy Sunners, older Queenslanders and respite groups.

Visitors can browse through many stalls, including one from Somerset Community Services, set up at the Mears Pavillion to inform them about support options available throughout the region.

Queensland’s Seniors Week 2011 will be celebrated from 20–28 August. The theme, Positively Ageless, reinforces the countless benefits of having a positive attitude to life at any age.

Somerset Community Services client Magdalene Swindwells, 85, is excited to be a part of the celebrations.

“Seniors Week brings people together and celebrates relationships between old and young,” she said.

“It gives us all a chance to get together, mingle and share memories.”

Somerset Community Service day respite client Carol Bevan, 58-years-old, said Seniors Week was very important.

“Older Queenslanders have a lot of stories to tell about our lives and to teach valuable lessons,” she said.

“I have a grandchild and I often help him to do his homework and read books.

“Seniors are an important member of every family.”

Somerset Community Service Manager Wendy Hurley said this event provided a great forum for clients to celebrate their valuable contributions to the region.

“Queensland’s Seniors Week enhances community connections and inter-generational relationships through events like this,” she said.

“All Somerset Community Service clients, including Maggie and Carol, have important experiences to share and this week is an opportunity for them to do that.”

Attendees will be provided with morning tea and a two course lunch for free. There will also be chances to win raffles and lucky door prizes.

This is one of several events held throughout the week in the local region to celebrate Queensland’s Senior Week. It will kick off at 9am and admission is free.

Transport will be available to and from the event with many stops throughout the region.

In 2011, community groups will hold more than 50 Seniors Week events across the state.
