Good Shepherd Emergency Relief Service (GSERS) provides material aid in the form of food, chemist and petrol vouchers to people unable to meet the essential needs of their family. The goods are distributed to people living in the bayside suburbs. Our outreach service is run by a dedicated team of volunteers and has operated for 20 years.
Disadvantaged people can access the service as a result of some unexpected expense often related to a traumatic experience such as a funeral. GSERS also works with the Brisbane Homeless Centre assisting them when possible to relocate people who have been evicted or cannot keep up their rent payments.
“The greatest satisfaction of our work is to help someone who appears to be in an impossible financial situation and sometimes our help is just enough to give them back some pride to carry on.” Good Shepherd Volunteer
The service is funded by the Federal Government Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs also the Department of Communities.
“To be stopped in the street by someone you have helped some six months previously and be told I have got a job now and if you guys didn’t help me when I was desperate, I would be in jail now. That is the reward that makes it all worth while.” Good Shepherd manager Ray McMurray
