A domestic violence refuge for women
Mary and Martha’s Refuge offers a range of support services for women and their families seeking refuge from family violence.Mary and Martha’s provides accommodation in a secure location for five families at one time with five self-contained two or three-bedroom units for women and their children.
Mary and Martha’s worked with 132 women and 171 children escaping domestic and family violence between March 2010 and February 2011.
In addition to providing a safe haven, the service offers emotional support, legal process support, assistance to access community resources, chaplaincy, information and referral services.
An art therapist is available to work with children who have been exposed or subjected to violence, family breakdown and other family issues.
Mary and Martha’s works from a strengths-based approach which empowers women to work actively toward a better future through high involvement in achieving their goals.
Privacy and security for the women and children is maintained by a six foot fence as well as night vision cameras outside the establishment operating around the clock.
As well as individual housing, the service has a playground for children, a recreational area for the women and a vegetable garden. Mary and Martha's is funded by the Queensland Department of Communities and Queensland Department of Housing.
