Caboolture’s youth Drop in Centre helps build a brighter future

Intercept graffiti workshop webCaboolture’s Intercept Youth & Family Service has launched a Drop in Centre to provide a safe place for young people to drop by for support, recreational activities and expert advice.

The opening will be held on 29 February from 4pm and all community members are invited to attend, meet the Intercept team and enjoy a sausage sizzle.

The Drop in Centre will provide vulnerable teens with the space to attend weekly activities such as: art workshops, cooking classes, personal development, music workshops, relaxation classes, games afternoons and movie sessions.

The Drop in Centre will enable people to visit the centre on Wednesday’s between 3-6pm to seek advice from a qualified youth worker about challenges facing teenagers at home or school.

Intercept Youth & Family Service Manager Michelle Barton said the centre will empower Caboolture’s young people with the message they are not alone.

“It has been identified a number of young people do not regularly take part in sports or hobbies and some may feel isolated,” she said.

“Not all young people and families feel comfortable accessing formal support so an informal space has been created where they can access professional information and chill out with friends.

“We will help out by linking people to the right services and give them some information about different issues facing youth.”

Queensland local member Mark Ryan has gotten behind the new initiative.

“The Drop in Centre will provide a much needed service to our community; it will provide young people with an opportunity to get support when they need it most,” he said.

"Well done to Caboolture's Intercept Youth & Family Service for taking the lead on this important initiative."

Michelle said Intercept hoped young people dropping in will identify current needs so activities can continually change and the space can grow in accordance with their changing needs.

“There is currently a competition running to name the place and the lucky winner will receive a $50 JB Hi Fi voucher check out Intercept’s Face Book page for further details!”

In 2011 Intercept worked with approximately 400 young people and their families.
